Optimizing for ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity: the GEO Playbook

Each AI engine picks and cites sources differently. This is a practical, per-platform playbook to get mentioned in ChatGPT, Google Gemini and Perplexity answers.

Getting cited in AI answers

To show up in AI answers you have to understand how each engine finds and picks its sources. The fundamentals are shared, clear answers, crawlable pages, trusted mentions, but each platform has its own habits. This playbook covers the three that matter most in 2026: ChatGPT, Google Gemini and Perplexity. For the concept behind it, start with What is GEO.

The shared fundamentals

Before the per-platform tactics, get these right, they help everywhere:

  • Answer the question in the first two sentences. Models lift self-contained passages. Bury the answer and you will not get quoted.
  • Use question-style headings. Match how people actually ask, so a model can map a query to your section.
  • Add structure. Tables, short lists and clear definitions are easy to extract and attribute.
  • Keep it current. Show clear dates and update facts. Stale pages lose to fresh ones on time-sensitive queries.
  • Let the crawlers in. Allow GPTBot, Google-Extended, PerplexityBot and friends in robots.txt.

ChatGPT

ChatGPT answers from its training plus live web search. To improve your odds:

  • Be a clear, quotable source on your niche topics, ChatGPT favors pages that answer directly.
  • Earn mentions on reputable third-party sites, ChatGPT leans on sources it already trusts.
  • Keep your entity data consistent (brand name, product names, descriptions) so it attributes you correctly.

Google Gemini and AI Overviews

Gemini powers Google AI Overviews, the AI answer at the top of Google. It draws heavily on Google's own index:

  • Classic SEO still feeds it. Pages that rank well and carry strong structured data are more likely to be pulled into an AI Overview.
  • Structured data matters. Article, FAQ, Product and Organization schema help Google understand and surface you.
  • Target question queries. AI Overviews trigger most on informational, how-to and comparison searches.

Perplexity

Perplexity is citation-first, every answer lists its sources, which makes it the clearest place to win:

  • Depth and clarity win. Perplexity favors thorough pages that cover a topic well.
  • Freshness is rewarded. It pulls recent, well-dated content for current questions.
  • Get referenced. The more trusted sites point to you, the more often Perplexity cites you.

How to measure it

You cannot improve what you do not measure. Track, per core topic:

  • How often each engine mentions your brand (your AI share of voice).
  • Which competitors get cited instead.
  • Which sources the AI pulls from, so you know where to earn mentions.

How dGENIX helps

The dGENIX GEO Engine measures your AI share of voice across all these engines, checks crawler access, scores citability and flags the gaps where a competitor is cited and you are not. GENI can rerun it monthly and alert you. Pair it with the Authority Engine to publish the content that earns those citations.
